The magic of his story telling during rain delays was an anticipated pleasure of my youth - I loved listening to Waite Hoyt as he broadcasted the Red's game, but oh when it rained! He was mesmerizing. He was the reason many fans would bring their transistor radios to the ballpark - yes, you could watch the game but watching it while listening to Waite describe what you were watching was perfect harmony between eyes and ears. Many a night I went to sleep with my radio tuned to the Reds and his voice calling the games. What a treasure.

I'm very excited to be in Cincinnati for a book signing at the Barnes & Noble (Kenwood Collection) on Jun 22 and a talk and signing at the Reds Hall of Fame on the 23rd. Can't "wait" to meet some of Hoyt's fan club!

Back in 1980 I wrote to him and he sent me a beautiful Hall of Fame plaque card and a nice small photo of him and his Yankee uniforms from the 1920s.

I had no idea that he was the announcer for the Cincinnati reds even until I saw this article I only knew he was a great Yankee pitcher they called the school boy that played with the great babe Ruth Lou Gehrig and the other great Yankees.

I am interested in learning as much as I can about this great man who really made my childhood memories even today.

Thank you for your message! Waite's son told me that his dad received letters by the bagful and replied to each and every one. Hope you enjoy his memoir, which will be released in April 2024. https://www.amazon.com/Schoolboy-Untold-Journey-Yankees-Hero/dp/1496236793/
